Movie Review | Despicable Me | 5 Out of 5 Stars

Margo Edith Agnes on roller coaster - Despicable Me

Another cartoon review? Really?

Absolutely yes!

I’m not posting this review about a newly released film. I’m also not posting this review because the film was a smash hit like Avatar.

I’m writing this review because this movie is a roller coaster of creative genius; it’s heartwarming for adults, hilarious for adults and children alike, and will leave you wishing you had 10,000 minions at your disposal every day.

Edith Agnes playing with the puppy - Despicable Me

This film received 11 award nominations including Best Animated Feature from the Golden Globes, BAFTA, and Teen Choice Awards. The creative cast includes the venerable Julie Andrews, the hilarious Russell Brand, Steve Carrell, and Jason Segal, as well as the lovely Miranda Cosgrove.

Despicable Me

The story centers around a villain named Gru who has a dream to steal the moon out of the sky. As the film moves along you learn about Gru’s insecurities, watch as he grows to love three adorable orphans, and see how he approaches learning from his mistakes. The message is perfect for spurring parent-children conversations about orphans and how much it means for them to find their forever home. Chris Renaud does a superb job as director. Impeccable story telling is the distinct marker of this film.

Impeccable story telling amidst subtle yet genius humor.

Smile for the camera - Despicable Me

If you have not already seen this movie, do it! Your funny bone and your kids will thank you.

Keep it real friends.

Video Productions | Reining Training Online

Home

Last week we gathered up all our gear, packed ourselves into a few vehicles and headed out west to Weatherford, Texas. The open range was calling. Well not really the open range…

Reining Training Online was calling.

They called us in need of some videographers and we jumped at the opportunity! We’re working on some training videos for them at this very moment but here’s a preview of the awesomeness to come.

Memories Films | Lee + Natasha

You may expect a family like the Carter’s, who’s most well known legacy is in regards to starting the Dallas Maverick’s Basketball Franchise, to be unapproachable. Nothing could be further from the truth. We were honored to be chosen among the Dallas/Ft. Worth Videographers to capture the wedding of the franchise founder’s grandson. Each person in this family as well as the Bride’s family were all great to work with and incredibly nice! I don’t think I ever saw Natasha, the bride, without a smile on her face and Lee, her Groom, was full of nervous energy as he tried to contain his excitement.

We shot this wedding at Dallas Baptist University where their family have been alma-maters for several generations. This location was beautiful! Their chapel is less than a year old and all the natural light flooded into the rooms to make for some breathtaking shots.

We decided to showcase the exit sequence to show a little different side of our wedding videos. It’s not a traditional warm fuzzy feeling as the music of Cat Power serenades the romantic night sky with beautifully contrasting bokeh in the background. As the editor, I was hoping to bring a little more weight to the romance that many videos lose with using overtly “happy” music. I wanted to bring attention to the deep intimacy that marriage represents and I thought that this dramatic sequence would help do that. I would love to know what you think about it!

What the Bokeh??

The word “Bokeh” comes from the Japanese word that means “Blur” or “Fuzzy”.

boke (暈け or ボケ)

Bokeh is the area of the film that is commonly referred to as The Circle of Confusion. In short, it is the blurry part of your picture or film. However it is much more difficult to explain what bokeh actually is than it is to recognize it in a photo. It wasn’t until the late 1990’s that anyone really cared about using blur as a technique. Of course filmmakers and photographers have been using focus to communicate their needs for decades, but would rarely try and use the Out-of-Focus (OOF) in the same regards. As technology advances more people are creating films, videos, and photographs. This large surge of “Creatives” may be the reason bokeh is getting more attention these days. It serves as a new way to help story tellers communicate in an artistic way.

I will only cover this concept with broad strokes and give you the resources to get more detailed information. My goal is to empower you with enough information that you can go out and start using bokeh to make spectacular images and video. Please post your successes so that we can celebrate victory together!

Two types of “Good Bokeh”

Circular (Hollywood) Style:

This style is used to take Out-Of-Focus Highlights (OOFHs) and turn them into an aesthetically pleasing circular blur to any light coming from the background. (IE: Alfie)

How do I get this effect?

In order to get this effect you must have your aperture all the way open, a low f-Stop, and an appropriate distance from the object based on your lens and camera capabilities. They have also created scenes of high contrast in regards to color as well as light.

DID YOU KNOW??

These circular blurs can be custom shaped to just about anything you want. The aperture ring on the inside of the lens determines the shape. You can make your own aperture adaptation out of non-reflective black paper and attach it to your lens. To learn how to do this, watch the youtube video posted below.

Creamy Bokeh

This is the classic blur that you see most often. You’ll see incidental circular formations due to the aperture and the natural physics of how light travels and reflects off of the internal mirror. The examples below are screen shots from the movie Inception.

How do I get this effect?

A scene with little light and color contrast, a medium to large aperture, and low f-Stop can attain this effect. Another consideration is the distance between the lens, subject, and the OOFHs.

These are the basic concepts you will want to experiment with in order to learn how to affectively use bokeh. There are many websites out there to help explain the science behind these concepts.

INTERESTING FACT:

The quality of bokeh is determined by how quickly the light can travel through the lens as well as how your camera reacts to that information. The least complicated lenses are called Prime Lenses and they will yield the best results.
